Doing animation

Post by Mr. Big (?) » Thu May 21, 2020 11:03 pm

I've tried animating in a variety of different ways, from Flash to ToonBoom to even on paper, but I just could never get a hang of animating and resisted giving it a go again for a long time.

I decided to pick it up again because a friend told me about a software he uses, Krita. This time I'm really have a blast animating. It helps that Krita is very easy to use compared to the other software (it also doesn't really crash easily, like Flash).

This is the first animation I did with it. This is from a scene I storyboarded. I thought it'd look fun animated, so I did it first:

Next is Felicia. Her hair always covers one of her eyes, but which side depends on what angle she's facing, so I wanted to see how I can achieve that with animating her head turn.

Animated Chiro flying. Getting the wing flaps right took some challenge, but some animator friends gave me tips that worked out.

Whenever I see the thread title I read it like "Doing" was pronounced similar like "Boing", just with a D instead of a B.
Having "Animation" next to it makes me think of the springy, jumpy sound effect often heard in cartoons.

There's a hardware chain in California called "The Doit Center" which I read like "The Doyt Center." A doit pronounced that way is also a trumpet technique.

There's a conversation in a Homestar Runner cartoon about this.

:bwuh: "What are you doing?"

:-P "Um, Did you just say 'doyng'?"

:offendash: "What? No. DO-ING. I said, 'What are you DO-ing?'"

:-P "Oh. Well, you spelled it the same."

:bwuh: "Wha-geh...?!"

I'll leave the sound effects of Kat taking her tail off to your imagination for the time being.

That animation also took 4 tries to get it to look remotely decent.

While animating is fun, it's also really hard :-I

This is something I noticed in old anime and some Western cartoons: two frame animation, but with a smear layer added on top to give the illusion of movement

Wanted to try it out

Attempt #2. I like this one better.

3 drawings. I made the 2nd drawing intentionally rougher to take the smear into account.

Jordan walking walking walking.

Roughed it out on TV Paint, but cleaned (and fixed) up on Krita.
