Re: ITT Post Your Random Thoughts
Has anyone ever parodied Breaking Bad like it's an episode of Rick and Morty? I don't know why it took so long to think of it myself, but it seems to fit really well.
"Jesse, we need to *belch* we need to go into the meth business, Jesse!"
"Ah, geez, Walt, I don't know if that's such a good idea!"
(Disclaimer: I have not actually watched Breaking Bad. It's on my to-do list.)

i think the show's tendency to have humor and comical situations (as can be seen by some of the screenshots i post) is to offset how dark it is

I liked the part in breaking bad where they made the drugs and were successful. other parts i did not enjoy as much was the ibit where they suffered consequences for their actions.

Re: ITT Post Your Random Thoughts
It's a little-known fact that there is no connection, officially, between JavaScript and Java. The two languages have very similar syntax (most notably in the use of periods to denote object heirarchy), but JavaScript—which was named LiveScript in its beta phase—was created by Netscape, who have never been affiliated with Java's creator Sun Microsystems. It still baffles me that Netscape got away with that. Maybe because Java was only a few months old and hadn't had time to establish itself as a brand whose trademark could be legally defended? Maybe because, in those early days, Sun's executives thought JavaScript's name recognition could be as beneficial to them as Java's was to Netscape? I'd love to find someone who was there at the time and ask them.

I am for a name change. I suggest naming JavaScript to "Garbage Script" or "M.E.S.S. : Made Exclusively for Shitty Scripts"

If it needs a new name, ECMAScript seems like the most reasonable one to adopt.

Re: ITT Post Your Random Thoughts
It just came into my mind again that before the year 2000 we abbreviated the year by omitting the 19, so 1995 was 95.
Today I write all year numbers in full, both before and after 2000.
I think it's mildly interesting how odd it is to abbreviate the years from 2000-2009, so it has changed my writing behavior for all year numbers.

Re: ITT Post Your Random Thoughts
I think deep down "video games are art" was always a kind of justification made by people who played them so they can pretend they were doing something other than playing video games.
I've heard this debate for years, even with people declaring it "solved" and that video games are art now.
But honestly? it was never solved, if anything i'd say it never will be because the starting position was never "is this a new medium for art", but "how do i make my hobby seem more meaningful so i don't feel bad about engaging in it"

I've yet to see a concrete argument that they are as a whole, a form of art
only people pointing to individual games and calling them art (which is debatable)

Re: ITT Post Your Random Thoughts
Art is a creation that is the result of a creative process. Most often it has, additional to the functional part, a strong aspect that engages with aesthetics (any sense), engages the mind, or a has a message to create an experience that connects the consumer/audience/viewer with the art piece.
Video Games are art. In contrast to many other art forms video games have a performative part that is completed by the player, similar to a reader of the book imagining the scenes in their head, or imagining what happens next while reading the book (especially in mystery novels).
You don't have to like the piece of art. It doesn't require you to, and neither the opposite.
I hate with the power of a thousand suns Ace Attorney: Apollo Justice but I recognize it as art, although flawed in my opinion.
Video games have carefully created textures, music, animation, and have coded behaviour to create a product that form a vision by many people that would consider their part in the process as art.

i've heard those arguments before and they didn't sell me on the prospect
they always feel like trying to find a reason to declare games art, so we go by the route of claiming they have creative processes in them so they're art
one could argue that toys are also art because someone designed a toy as designing it is a creative process

Toys are more utilitarian art but art nonetheless.

there is nothing wrong with playing with toys, toys are fun
and at the end of the day, that's why people play video games in the first place, to have fun

My buddy and I were taking about this and we decided that there are video games which are games, and video games which are toys. Like Cuphead is a game, while Minecraft is at heart a very complex toy.DaikatunaRevengeance wrote: ↑Sun Sep 12, 2021 11:04 amperhaps that is the route to take, admitting the video games are toys
Neither category is inherently more or less valid, they just satisfy different needs. Sometimes you want to challenge yourself with difficulty and rules and structure; other time you want to, you know, toy around.

Re: ITT Post Your Random Thoughts
I think video games are art just like a lot of other forms of human expression can be called art. But first we'd need to determine what art even means. Is it the creative process? The expression of ideas and experiences? The performance? The story telling? All of the above and then some? Yes, you could say they are toys but what's stopping toy-making being considered art?
I do agree the conversation about whether games are art or not come from an iffy place though. There's no shame in enjoying something even if it isn't 'deep'.

Re: ITT Post Your Random Thoughts
I think much of the problem there is that video games are perhaps the biggest medium to have been created under late-stage capitalism, thereby severely muddying the waters as to whether they're art to be experienced or a media product to be consumed. Like, creator-driven indie games seem much more like art than whatever the latest AAA console titles or whale-hunting mobile gachas are.

Re: ITT Post Your Random Thoughts
I include indies under my assesment as well
indies, aaa games and the ones inbetween those two are all equally held up as "proof" that video games are art now. Often all people really need is the game to be weird, heavily stylized or have a plot that's decent and it gets branded as art.
which again goes back to the part i started this with that this is all really more a way to justify engaging in one's hobby than an actual discussion and has been since the beginning.

Re: ITT Post Your Random Thoughts
Too bad, I still want to give my two cents and NO ONE can stop me
In my mind there isn’t any doubt that video games as a medium are art. But, as with every medium, individual works can have more or less artistic merit. Like cinema is art, but [insert Michael Bay movie here] is less likely to provoke an artistic response than, say, The Shining. And in the same vein, Fortnite? Artistic level not too high. Bastion or Undertale or Disco Elysium? Probably higher.
The more interesting question, I think, is how the artisticness of video games separates from other audiovisual media. For instance, the experience of playing Telltale’s Walking Dead hits differently from the experience of watching someone else’s playthrough on YouTube. In the latter case you’re essentially watching a movie (which can still be a meaningful and “art” experience), but playing the game yourself means that YOU are the one making it all happen; YOU are making those horrible choices and clicking the mouse to mercy-kill some zombified sad sack. That involvement by the audience is something other media really can’t do. And I think when video games feel their most “artistic” is when they lean into this participation aspect. Which is why some folks cite Bioshock as the first real Game As Art.
All’s I know for sure is, I have a buddy who played Passage (that extremely minimalist indie game about life and aging) and when he was done, he felt really affected and had to think about his life for a while. And if that’s not an artistic response, it seems at least near enough to make no difference.
tl;dr - pee pee doo doo
